Home, safe and just right

We were expecting our first child, a little boy, and the thought of meeting him in the safety of our own home felt just right.

The contractions started around 1am, they came on quickly and were long and strong with only a minute break in between. I found relief on the yoga ball in the middle of the room, with my partner around me and his hands applying pressure to my lower back. It made a world of difference to have him by my side. We were alone, but a strong team.

I go into the tub from enblidstart.dk when the home birth midwife is on her way. She says we just have to let her know if anything new happens. Two minutes later we call back – the water breaks in the tub, and the contractions immediately begin.

We put the phone on speaker and the midwife calmly and competently guides my partner. She still has 14 minutes in the taxi. I gasp, the best thing I've learned, while my partner finds towels and checks to see if the head is on its way.

Then she finally steps through the door. She throws her shoes in the hallway, but comes in with presence and calmness and quickly checks how far I am. 9.5 cm.

I have to keep gasping until my body takes over completely and after 20 minutes of pushing, I reach for our little boy in the water and lift him onto my chest. I look at him and at my partner, who is sitting there with tears in his eyes.

At 7:59, we welcomed our little human. It was a wild birth and an absolutely fantastic experience, even though I had to go to the hospital afterwards to get stitches after a rupture, we were just looking forward to coming home to our little bubble again.

And next time? I dream of another home birth.
