What do the experts say?

All calculations are based on healthy pregnant women who are expected to have an uncomplicated birth, as most do.

16 studies from 500,000 intended home births show that women who intend to give birth at home rather than in hospital are less likely to experience many different complications.

20-60% less risk of:

Caesarean section
Epidural block
Vest stimulation
Episiotomy (cut that increases the opening from the vagina to the back)
Operative vaginal delivery
Electronic monitoring

10-30% less risk of:
Maternal infections (diseases transmitted from mother to baby before or during birth. The infections can attack the baby's brain and negatively affect mental and physical aspects)
Grade 3 and 4 rupture
Major bleeding - Studies show that overall results for postpartum bleeding indicate that women who planned to give birth at home either bled the same or less than those who planned to give birth in the hospital.

A new summary of the best available research shows that planned hospital births increase the number of complications and interventions, without any demonstrable reduction in mortality among mothers and their children.

In the home birth group, all interventions are counted, even if the woman is transferred to the hospital.

20% more cesarean sections
50% more people receive vaginal stimulation, epidural block and episiotomy
50% more experience major bleeding
50% more get infections after birth
3x as many experience electronic surveillance
50% more babies have an electrode screwed into their scalp
20% more children of multiple births are admitted to the neonatal unit

Better establishment of breastfeeding as a home birth

There are around 50% more hospital births who have difficulty establishing breastfeeding than home births.

(Janssen 2009) Study shows

That birth trauma such as brain hemorrhage, fractures of the collarbone, long bones or skull, and nerve damage were 3 times more common in hospital births than in home births.

After statistical control for significant risk factors, it is seen that planning a home birth is neither more nor less dangerous.

In the largest study with over 500,000 pregnant women with an expected normal birth, the mortality rate is below 0.1% in both the group with planned hospital birth and the group with planned home birth.

Midwives want to give birth at home for good reasons

Midwives know what to choose between when giving birth, and they know what the research says about home births.

In 2015, the Danish Midwives' Association asked its members about their wishes for a place of birth, with just under half of those who were pregnant answering that they imagined giving birth at home. At the same time, 61% of midwives who had given birth answered that they wanted to give birth at home if they were to have more children in the future.

Midwives see the home as the obvious place to give birth, where they choose familiarity and security and opt out of disruptions and unrest.
