Considerations for home birth

Once you have decided on a home birth, it is important to consider some things to ensure that the birth is as safe and comfortable as possible. Every family's wishes and needs are different, so find out what suits you best.

Do you want to give birth in water?
Many women find that a water birth in warm water can relieve pain and provide greater relaxation during labor and delivery. Consider whether you want the option of using a birthing tub, and plan well in advance so that all equipment is ready for the birth.

Birth support and birth attendant

Consider whether you would like additional help beyond the midwife and your partner. This could be a doula, sister or friend who can provide support, provide fluids and snacks, or take pictures along the way. Also remember to consider whether a student midwife can be present.

Siblings during home birth
If you have older children, it is important to plan whether they will be present during the birth or cared for outside the home. If they will be at home, one adult per child is recommended so that the children feel safe and can withdraw if they wish.

Pet
Consider how your pets will be handled during the birth. Should they be present, in a secluded area, or cared for outside? Plan ahead so you can have peace of mind leading up to and during the birth.

Photo and video
If you want to document the birth, it is a good idea to agree in advance who will take photos or film, and which moments you want to immortalize.

Who will receive the child?
Discuss with the midwife who will receive the baby at birth. This ensures that the midwife can guide you in the best way when your baby is born.

Mood decoration
Create a cozy atmosphere with soft music, string lights or LED lights around the birthing tub or in the room. This helps create security and a positive experience during birth.

Are there any neighbors you should consider?
If you live close together, it may be a good idea to inform your neighbors about the upcoming home birth. This can be done discreetly, for example with a small note, so that the birth is not disturbed and neighbors are prepared for any noise.

When should the umbilical cord cutting take place?
Most midwives practice late cord clamping, which has several benefits for the baby. Talk to your midwife about when and who should cut the umbilical cord. Also consider whether you are interested in a lotus birth.

Handling the placenta
The midwife can take the placenta with you if you do not want to keep it. If you want to keep it, it can be stored in a bag in the refrigerator or freezer, for example for planting a tree or for an impression. Alternatively, the placenta can be delivered to the hospital.

Food and drink
An advantage of home birth is that you can decide what and when you want to eat. Have easy and healthy meals ready in the fridge and freezer so you have access to energy before, during and after the birth.

Postpartum visit
Consider how you want to handle visits after the birth. Family and friends are often very eager to see the little new wonder, but the first few days can be quiet and undisturbed. Notice and listen to your own feelings so that you can create time and space to get to know your child in peace and security, even if you are very proud and want to show off your baby.
