What is a water birth?

A water birth is a natural and soothing way to give birth, where the mother is in water during the birth itself. This means that the baby’s first encounter with the world takes place in the water, which can create a calm and safe transition from the womb to the outside world. It is important to note that it is not considered a water birth if you are only in water during labor and before the birth – it is the actual birth in the water that defines a true water birth.

Water birth can take place in a birthing tub, a bathtub or other safe environment where the water can be maintained at the optimal temperature. To ensure the well-being of both mother and baby, it is recommended that the water is kept at a temperature of approximately 35-37 degrees Celsius. This ensures that the baby is not exposed to overheating, which can affect the heartbeat. The baby's heart rate may already be slightly elevated during birth, and the correct water temperature helps to keep stress levels low for both mother and baby.

One of the most well-known benefits of water birth is its natural pain relief. The warm water confuses nerve cells, reducing pain signals to the brain and thus relieving labor pain. At the same time, the buoyancy and warmth of the water promote relaxation and make it easier to move freely and find comfortable birthing positions. Many women find that their water birth provides a more natural and less stressful water birth experience.

During a water birth, you will typically be covered in water up to your stomach, and you can choose any birthing position that feels comfortable. You can choose to be naked, or cover yourself up, for example by lightly covering your breasts. Many women report that the increased freedom of movement in the water makes the birth more comfortable and reduces muscle tension.

Water birth experiences show that many women feel calmer, less stressed and better able to cope with labor. Water birth can also provide a gentler transition for the baby, allowing the baby to meet the world in a natural and relaxing way.

If you are considering a water birth, it may be a good idea to discuss the options with your midwife. Together you can find the best solution that suits your wishes and needs, so that you have the safest, calmest and most natural birth experience possible.
